See our clinical assessment approach
When should you pause and seek medical advice?

Pause routine exercise and seek medical advice for sudden severe change, new neurological symptoms, breathing difficulty, chest pain, major injury, or feeling acutely unwell.

This guide is educational and does not replace diagnosis or urgent care.

Homecare physiotherapy is where a qualified physiotherapist visits you at home rather than requiring every session to take place at a clinic. For people recovering from surgery, managing a chronic neurological condition, or living with pain or disability, a home visit may make rehabilitation easier to access when it is clinically appropriate.

Which Rehabilitation Needs May Be Suitable for Home Visits?

Neurological physiotherapy: Stroke rehabilitation, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, Guillain-Barré syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and post-ICU neurological recovery may be considered after an assessment and medical review.

Orthopaedic physiotherapy: Knee replacement (TKR), hip replacement (THR), rotator cuff surgery, spinal surgery recovery, fracture rehabilitation, back and neck pain.

Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation: COPD, post-cardiac bypass, heart failure, and post-COVID respiratory rehabilitation may require clearance and coordination with the medical team.

Complex rehabilitation: Post-ICU syndrome, sepsis recovery, and multi-system injury rehabilitation require an individual safety assessment.

General physiotherapy: Sports injuries, muscle and joint pain, functional training, and post-operative rehabilitation can be discussed during an initial assessment.

What Happens in the First Session?

The first session is an assessment visit lasting 60–90 minutes. The physiotherapist will review your medical history and investigations, assess your strength, range of motion, balance, sensation, and functional ability, set short- and medium-term goals, begin initial treatment, and explain the proposed program and session frequency.

How Many Sessions Might I Need?

  • Acute back or joint pain: the number and spacing of sessions depend on assessment findings and response
  • Post-knee or hip replacement: a staged plan reviewed with the surgical and physiotherapy teams
  • Stroke rehabilitation: a plan that may change over weeks or months as goals and function change
  • COPD pulmonary rehab: a medically supervised program with frequency set to symptoms and tolerance
  • Post-ICU complex recovery: a longer plan with review as activity and independence change
