Recovery is highly variable. Early gains may be seen over weeks, while severe weakness, neurological injury, swallowing or cognitive problems, and complications can extend recovery over many months. A plateau in one measure does not always mean functional recovery has stopped.
Approximate time
Initial reconditioning often takes 4–12 weeks. Moderate to severe post-ICU or neurological recovery commonly continues for 3–12 months or longer, with reassessment at regular milestones.

Safety notes
- Progression must be coordinated with medical restrictions, lines, wounds, oxygen, and blood-pressure responses.
- New confusion, fever, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a sudden neurological change needs medical review.
- Caregivers should be taught safe handling rather than lifting or pulling a patient without instruction.
