Knee Pain Physiotherapy: Strength, Mobility and Function

Knee physiotherapy focuses on the combination of symptoms, strength, range of motion, balance, walking, and the activities you want to regain.

Knee care is built around function: getting up from a chair, managing stairs, squatting, walking, or returning to exercise. Strength and load are progressed according to swelling, movement quality, and the relevant diagnosis.

Discuss Your Recovery Plan
Expected prognosis

Knee symptoms can improve when load, strength, movement, and confidence are addressed together. Recovery depends on the diagnosis, irritability, swelling, medical history, and whether surgery or an acute injury is involved.

Approximate time

A first assessment commonly takes 45–90 minutes. Strength and function often need 6–12 weeks of progressive practice, while post-operative and complex recovery continues according to healing and surgical milestones.

What this service covers

  • Knee osteoarthritis and activity-related pain
  • Knee pain after a sprain, strain, or period of rest
  • Difficulty with stairs, squatting, walking, or getting up
  • Strength and balance loss after surgery or injury
  • Return to work, exercise, or sport with appropriate clearance

Physiotherapy & rehabilitation methods

  • Assessment of pain behaviour, swelling, range, strength, balance, gait, and task tolerance
  • Progressive quadriceps, hip, calf, and whole-leg strengthening
  • Mobility and movement practice for stairs, sit-to-stand, squatting, and walking
  • Load management and pacing for work, exercise, and daily activities
  • Coordination with the surgical or medical team when restrictions apply

What affects recovery?

  • Diagnosis and tissue-healing stage
  • Swelling, range of motion, and quadriceps strength
  • Walking pattern, balance, and confidence
  • Exercise progression and recovery between sessions
  • Weight-bearing or movement restrictions after surgery

Safety notes

  • Urgent medical review may be needed for a hot, very swollen knee with fever, a locked knee after significant injury, sudden calf swelling, chest pain, or rapidly worsening function.
  • Do not progress weight-bearing or resistance beyond surgical instructions.
  • Pain during exercise should be interpreted with the overall response later that day and the next morning.

Clinical note: Timelines are approximate educational ranges, not an individual prognosis. The treating physiotherapist adjusts the rehabilitation plan after assessment and coordinates with the medical team when needed.
